Session 1: Traditional Cultures and Modernization |
| |
The protection and development of traditional culture against
the backdrop of globalization no longer means the inheritance
and continuation in a general sense; it represents the transformation
and remolding of traditional culture in the course of modernization.
This has become an important part of maintaining the world's
cultural diversity during economic globalization.
China has summarized traditional culture and modernization
as well as the relationship between them as seen in various
countries. It is their hope that the discussion will focus
on how to preserve and develop traditional culture amid modernization
and how to make the traditional culture of all nationalities
a part of modern human life. |
Key Issues for Discussions:
- The specific measures taken to rescue and protect traditional
culture during modernization, including the main measures to protect
traditional culture; the legislative model for intangible cultural
heritage and its implementation; and how to reasonably combine
traditional culture with economic development, etc.
- How will traditional culture be inherited and innovated amid
modernization? How can traditional culture accurately reflect
our history and still adapt to modern society?
- How can we build a mechanism for cultural exchange and development
between various countries? What measures should the countries
take?
Presentation:
- Presentation by Sun Jiazheng, Minister of Culture of China

Session 2: International Convention on Cultural Diversity
|
| |
At the 6th Annual Ministerial Meeting (Opatija, Croatia, October
2003), Ministers renewed the mandate of the Working Group on
Cultural Diversity and Globalization (WGCD&G) and agreed
that the Working Group should work closely with UNESCO in developing
the Convention for the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural
Contents and Artistic Expressions, find appropriate opportunities
to bring the work of the INCP into the discussions at UNESCO,
serve as a think tank to address various issues related to the
Convention, and continue its work to raise awareness about cultural
diversity. |
Key Issues for Discussion:
- Has the Working Group fulfilled its mandate given by Ministers
in Opatija?
- How can INCP member countries continue to support the UNESCO
process currently underway?
- How can the INCP ensure that the UNESCO process: 1) allows
INCP members to be heard; 2) incorporates the vision of the INCP
with regard to the basic principles and objectives of a convention;
and 3) proceeds in a timely and efficient manner?
- How can the INCP assist in terms of linkages between a UNESCO
Convention and other international organizations such as the WTO,
WIPO and UNCTAD?
- How can the INCP assist in terms of linkages between a UNESCO
Convention and other international organizations such as the WTO,

one of the few remaining old tourist sites in Shanghai. Surrounding
the gardens is Shanghai's bazaar, a maze of small streets
and alleyways where vendors sell their wares and foodstuffs
to visiting tourist and locals.
Yuyuan Gardens is believed to date to the 16th century when
Zhang Nanyang, an architect, was commissioned by the Pan family
of the Ming court to build the gardens. Built in traditional
Chinese style with numerous rock and tree garden areas, ponds,
dragon-lined walls and numerous doorways and zigzagging bridges
separating the various garden areas and pavilions. |
